Run Your Race

Reflections on our spiritual workout as given to us by the apostle Paul.
Acts 20: 19-24
19 I served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing by the plots of my Jewish opponents. 20 You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house. 21 I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.
22 “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. 23 I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. 24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.
In this passage, Paul was leading by example. In Hebrews 12:1, Paul says we are to lay aside our distractions and run the race with endurance. Here in Acts, he is doing just that. He knew bad things were potential ahead of him, even to the point of death. Regardless of that, he obeyed God and ran the race God laid in front of him with endurance.
A question for you to think about. If our spiritual life were really like a race, a 5K for example, how many of us would even make it off the couch? I would offer the answer for many of us is that we would be content to stay right on the couch. Many times were worry about too much. For example, we worry about what other people think. We need to lay those distractions aside and be just like Paul. Even with the possibility of death, he laid aside the distractions and finished the race.
So lay aside all your distractions. Step up to the starting line and run the race with endurance, discipline and perserverence to ultimate finish line in eternity!
