5 Reasons to Consider a Triathlon

Over time you have probably found yourself stuck in a rut. If you have been a runner for a long period of time, you know what I am talking about. You have a routine where you run 3-4 times a week and probably the same route most of the time. At some point you might experience burnout. Maybe it is time for a change and a triathlon is a great way to change things up. If you are not familiar with a triathlon, this is an event that contains 3 disciplines: swimming, biking and running. Triathlons come in many shapes and sizes in regards to...

The Barefoot Journey: My First Half-Marathon

The Barefoot Journey: My First Half-Marathon

My journey to my first half-marathon is nearly complete. In just a few days, I will run in my first half-marathon, the Canal Race along the Roanoke River in Roanoke Rapids, NC. As I’d mentioned previously, I do not have a long history with running, so jumping up to the half-marathon distance (13.1 miles) is definitely a big step for me. But an important part of the story has been my transition to minimalist running (barefoot running). Just three months ago, I started this journey and I believe I’m a better runner today as a result. In a...

Mental Training for Triathletes

Triathlon is a physically demanding sport.  Training sessions regularly focus on developing skill, strength and endurance in the swim, bike and running disciplines.  But what about the mind?  Do you spend the time on mental training to prepare yourself to be at your peak from a mental fitness standpoint?  The mental training aspects of triathlon are, unfortunately, one of the last areas that triathletes choose to focus on and it shows on race day. A few days ago, three members of The Second Wind’s triathlon team joined David Glover,...

2013 Disney Marathon Weekend Recap – Part 2

Where to begin….well, how about early! Anyone who has run a runDisney event is used to early morning starts. If you have never run in a runDisney event, if a clock had words, it may say “o’dark thirty”. No matter where you stay, wake up calls are early for the marathon. Some may have alarms set for 2:00 am, whiles others may be able to wait longer. The transportation to the staging area from resort hotels begins at 3:00 am. Staying at Old Key West was perfect as we were able to walk to the starting corrals, allowing us...

February Triple Challenge

The year has gotten off to a fantastic start. You challenged yourself to cover the equivalent of a marathon, strengthened your core and spent time in 2 Timothy throughout January! Congratulations on accomplishing these goals! As the calendar changes to February, we have some exciting challenges to keep you going both physically and spiritually fit. In February we all know that we have Valentine’s Day, so we thought it would be fitting to center the challenge this month around love. In the bible, we find the word “love”...

How Lance Armstrong Can Find Forgiveness

Lance Armstrong cheated.  By now, the world knows it.  He used performance enhancing drugs, pushed others to use them and threatened those who tried to rat him out.  And he did it while winning seven Tour De France titles, amassing millions of dollars and starting a very successful cancer research foundation that bears his name.  But in the end, he cheated and he’s on the verge of losing all of those earthly rewards, not to mention his reputation and honor. Yesterday afternoon, I was listening to a national sports radio talk show host as...

2013 Disney Marathon Weekend Recap – Part 1

This past weekend was the 20th running of the Disney Marathon and what a thrill it was to be a part of it. I decided a two part post would be in order to share the experience of the weekend. In part 1, I wanted to share about the events leading up to marathon morning. After countless weeks of training, the time arrived for fellow Second Wind team member Ken and I to head south to the house of the mouse! This was going to be a quick trip as we were flying down to Orlando on Saturday and then back on Monday. As Saturday arrived, the excitement...

Learning to Run Faster: Improving Your Flexibility

No matter whether you are new to running or if you’ve been running for years, you’ve likely asked the question: how can I run faster?  It’s a common question, but the answers are very different depending on whom you ask and what your personal situation is.  If you’ve been running for years, you may have a solid base and need to focus on some speed drills to push through to a new plateau.  By contrast, if you’re new to running you may need to simply log more miles  (I know, that isn’t so...
